Growth Form: Woody shrubs or small trees, glabrous or pubescent with simple or dendritic hairs.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, sometimes geminate. Margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary or terminal inflorescences, often congested racemes or panicles. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx tubular, 5-lobed. Corolla sometimes slightly zygomorphic, tubular, 5-lobed, the tube obconical or slightly inflated, the lobes short. Stamens 5, usually subequal filaments inserted on corolla tube, variously pubescent; anthers included. Ovary superior, 2-celled, on a small disk, glabrous; style 1, erect; stigma capitate, at about the same level as anthers.

Fruit: Fruit a hard or succulent berry. Seeds prismatic; embryo straight in endosperm.
